Tyumen – The First Russian Town in Siberia

TyumenTyumen is a Siberian city located on the Tura River which crosses the city from the north-west to the south-east. It is the administrative center and the largest city of Tyumen Oblast.
The Tyumen area was annexed to Russia by a Cossack Yermak Timofeyevich in 1585. It originally belonged to Siberia Khanate – Tatar Turkic political entity ruled by a Khan. Early Russian settlers’ was often attacked until the middle of the 17th century when they made up the majority of Tyumen population. Therefore founded in 16th century to support Russian expansion to Siberia Tyumen was the first Russian outpost.
Since its foundation, Tyumen has always been an important settlement. Located at the crossing of water and land routes, the town rapidly developed from a small military settlement to a large commercial and industrial city. It was initially an important trade center between Siberia and China and central Russia which gained its real prosperity with Transsiberian Railway building.
During the 1930s Tyumen became a major Siberian industrial city of the Soviet Union. After the discovery of rich oil and gas fields in the Tyumen Oblast in the 1960s, Tyumen became the capital of the Soviet oil industry. Nowadays Tyumen stays an important service center for the gas and oil industries in Russia.

Today Tyumen looks like a big village with clusters of tall buildings. It even receives a nickname as the Capital of Villages. Historically it was mainly built up with single- and two-storey wooden buildings, and surrounded by a number of villages. Therefore the architecture of Tyumen is too diverse to be characterized by any style. Cityscape consists of several different looking areas: Historical center at the high bank with its old brick and lumber historical merchant houses and buildings; Bukharskaya Sloboda – a Historic dormitory area (provincial view); City Center – built-up between 1948 and 1978 it is a center of political and business activities; New Center – the modern territory and industrial area with tall buildings; plus the areas of New and old dormitories.
There are many parks and Gardens of different size located around the Tyumen making town landscape green and fresh. Some of this parks also has sport and entertaining components. There are many cinemas and clubs. Tyumen has had its own Drama and Comedy Theatre since 1858. Music Hall, one of the best Russian Circus, numerous museums and art galleries, professional Puppet Show, – Tyumen has a range of entertainment possibilities for all ages.
The population of Tyumen includes people from over a hundred different nationalities, most belong to Russians, Ukrainians or Tatars.
